Senior Project Manager


Job Description

Our Client is looking for a highly motivated Senior Project Manager to join our client’s talented team in a growing IT company. The role will be responsible for ensuring the successful delivery of portfolio projects. They will do this by providing a consistent approach to delivery, utilization of the best tools and methodologies for the situation and reporting of governance information. They are responsible for ensuring that governance procedures are adhered to and that governance documentation is kept up to date as per the portfolio framework. The role will include oversight and management of the business change lifecycle of the portfolio. This will involve working with Agile (Scrum and Kanban) teams and more traditional project delivery.

A key requirement of the role will be the ability to lead and help others through delivery, encouraging an agile mindset for non-software projects.

The senior project manager will report directly to the head of change management and will have responsibility for several projects. The role will be expected to work alongside a business product owner and will be responsible for ensuring a consistent approach is maintained.


  1. Delivery of medium/large projects from across the range of services
  • Management of a small portfolio of high-priority projects and changes
  • Ensuring these are delivered by the business within the parameters of, time, cost, and quality
  • Provide and maintain a consistent approach to delivering projects
  • Utilise the best tools and methodologies to increase project success rates
  • Enable the business to focus on outputs and benefits by providing governance and management of projects
  • Reporting on governance information to the Portfolio Office
  • Develop contacts from the wider civil service to promote best practice sharing.

2. Planning and management of activities and deliverables to reach the appropriate outcome

  • Ensure formal governance procedures are adhered to manage the lifecycle of a project to ensure a successful outcome
  • Create project documentation that is light touch but meets the needs of key governance boards to cover areas such as, risk, issues, project plans, benefit plans
  • Ensure that project governance documentation is kept up to date for the utilisation of the Portfolio Office and seek the most effective way of displaying information alongside the portfolio office
  • Effectively use management techniques to co-ordinate and facilitate project activities with product owners , service managers and executive sponsors
  • Organise the project team to maximise delivery outcomes
  • Remove blockers to the effective delivery of the project

3.Stakeholder engagement and requirement gathering

  • Work alongside product owners, business leads and subject matter experts from the business
  • Work with the business to form a consistent understanding of project objectives and a definition of done
  • Enable the business to be a fundamental part of delivery, focusing on the output and benefits
  • Provide regular communications with stakeholders to maintain engagement with projects
  • Support for resourcing and recruiting projects to ensure delivery

4.Line management of project/delivery stream

  • Direct line management of the Project Delivery Stream of the change management team
  • Working alongside the digital programme manager to ensure the successful delivery of the portfolio of change

5.Up-skilling of staff members in project delivery

  • Responsible for the development of the team to ensure they are sufficiently trained and developed to assist the Project Delivery Stream in ensuring the successful delivery of projects within the portfolio
  • Develop staff from across in project methodologies, to ensure a consistent way of delivering using the best tools.
  • Help to develop relevant training material for the in various project and programme delivery methodologies to create a programme of learning in change management.

8.Other duties

    • Provide a flexible approach to assist across the CMO
    • Provide SLT support across the change management team and strategy and business development function
    • Develop an understanding of the wider area of change
    • Develop an understanding of governance processes, including budget and cost management alongside risk and benefit management / realisation
    • Occasional travel to other site may be required
    • Understanding of wider Government change agenda

Required experience/skills

    • Bachelor degree In business Management or equivalent.
    • Professional certification in a project discipline
    • Experience of working in a project environment
    • Experience of stakeholder management or requirement gathering
    • Willingness to study for professional certification
    • Strong written and oral communication skills

Desirable experience skills.

    • Experience in successfully leading projects
    • Experience of working with different project delivery methodologies


  • Languages:  English + European Languages (Spanish/Portuguese)
